🍫 Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
Did your dog eat chocolate? Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs cannot metabolize. Enter your dog's weight, the type of chocolate eaten, and the amount consumed to instantly evaluate the toxicity risk level and get emergency guidelines.
Toxicity Danger Level
Estimated dosage is very low. Keep an eye on your dog for minor stomach upset, but clinical poisoning is unlikely.
Why is Chocolate Toxic to Dogs?
Chocolate is processed from the seeds of the cacao tree. Cacao contains natural chemical stimulants known as methylxanthines, specifically **theobromine** and **caffeine**.
While humans easily break down and metabolize these compounds, dogs process them much slower. The chemicals build up in their system, leading to dangerous overstimulation of their nervous system, heart rate, and metabolic pathways.
Poisoning Symptoms & Toxicity Scale
Symptoms depend on the amount of theobromine consumed relative to the dog's body weight. The standard veterinary toxicity threshold scale is as follows:
- Mild Symptoms (≥ 20 mg/kg): Vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, drooling, and increased thirst.
- Moderate Symptoms (≥ 40 mg/kg): Racing heart rate (tachycardia), rapid panting, restlessness, and hyperactive behavior.
- Severe Symptoms (≥ 60 mg/kg): Muscle tremors, spasms, seizures, coordinate loss (ataxia), and severe cardiac arrhythmia.
